Sounding The Shed  2025   (Edited performance)

“Sounding the Shed”, a sound based performance project, was presented at The Murtoa Stick Shed as part of the National Trust’s Heritage Festival in 2025. Built to store grain at the start of WW2, the Shed is situated in the town of Murtoa in the Wimmera region of North Central Victoria.

Staged live, I combined musical instrument performance with site specific field recordings, and sound activations of the shed itself.

The project developed from a site specific research methodology focusing on sound based practice to open to a deeper understanding of public sites. What can we learn of site through listening that seeing doesn’t reveal?

The origins of the project dates back to 2019 when I’d read about a dinner featuring local produce that was held within an old grain shed. The space itself looked amazing.  A vast, darkened interior, rows of poles stretching into the distance like a medieval cathedral. I was reminded of an amazing space within a castle in Italy that I had played in during an art residency. I wondered what would it sound like to play within the Stick Shed. These thoughts lead to a Master's research project that I later developed into "Sounding the Shed".
